JEAN-BAPTISTE REGNAULT, BARON (1754-1829) Portrait of the Empress Josephine wearing the diadem of the coronation decorated with diamonds and emeralds. Oil on canvas, bears the stamp of red wax on the frame to the parties of Almeida and Ferreira of Luis Augusto Ferreira de Almeida (1817-1900), 1st count of Carvalhido. Very beautiful wooden frame and gilded stucco from the Empire period B.E.60 x 48,5 cm 82 x 72 cm with frame We find moreover these same arms girded with the orders of The Tower and the sword and of Villa Vicosa on the portrait of the Count in 1873 by Pierre Jean Edmond Castan. We would like to thank Mr. Alban Peres for his precious help in identifying the arms of Almeida. "The painting takes the portrait of the Empress in the great composition of the wedding of Prince Jerome Bonaparte and Princess Frederica-Catherine of Wurtemberg. However, the expressiveness of the face has "led to the belief that the work was done at Malmaison, following a posing session." Nicolas Sainte Fare Garnot Curator "In this precious ornament described by the painter Regnault, the Empress's tiara shows two imposing branches of diamond laurels joining above the forehead and resting on a flowery band set with splendid emeralds, a principle of naturalistic composition peculiar to the Empire style" Karine Huguenaud Fondation Napoléon Provenance: - Hôtel Drouot room n°1, 14-15 March 1870, "Ancient and modern paintings forming the collection of the Vicomte de Carvalhido", n°56 "Un portrait de l'Impératrice jusqu'à mi-corps" (attributed to Gérard). - Sale in Paris. - French private collection Exhibitions: - Palais du Trocadéro, Portraits Nationaux, 1878, n° 765, (By Baron Gérard). - Napoleon The Eagle Over Europe, Four exhibitions in China, Hubei Provincial Museum, Tianjin Museum, Lianonig Provincial Museum, 2015. Biographies: Jean-Baptiste REGNAULT (9 October 1754 - 12 November 1829 Paris). At the age of ten he was copying drawings lent to him by the collector Bataille de Montval, when his father decided to leave with the whole family for America. There, entrusted to a captain at sea, he became a ship's boy for five years, until his widowed mother returned to Paris to find him. Back in Paris, he became a pupil of Nicolas-Bernard Lépicié, Joseph-Marie Vien and Jean Bardin, who took him to Rome where he continued his training. His Diogenes visited by Alexander won him the Prix de Rome in 1776. He stayed at the Villa Medici with Jacques-Louis David and Pierre Peyron. He was elected member of the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture in 1783 and at the Salon, he exhibited his reception piece The Education of Achilles by the Centaur Chiron (Louvre Museum). In 1787, he lived in the Cour du Commerce in Paris and had Louis Lafitte as a pupil. He introduced his young neighbour, Constance-Marie Bondelu, to painting. He painted many antique subjects, then became passionate about the Revolution and painted Liberty or Death for the Salon of 1795: in the centre, the Genius of France with its tricoloured wings flies over the globe expressing the universality of the ideas of 1793, on his left, Death, on his right, the Republic with the symbols of liberty, equality and fraternity. Under the First Empire, Jean-Baptiste Regnault executed large-scale paintings with a formalism inherited from antiquity. On 7 February 1807, he was appointed professor of painting at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, a position he had held since 21 December 1805, but without a salary. He succeeded Clément-Louis-Marie-Anne Belle and was succeeded by Ingres in 1829. He exhibited at the Salon until 1809, when he abandoned his official career and continued to paint subjects from mythology for his own pleasure. From 1816 to 1822 he was professor of drawing at the École Polytechnique. He received the title of baron on 19 July 1829. He married Sophie Meyer in the first marriage and had three sons. He is buried in the Père-Lachaise cemetery (36th division) in Paris. Luis Augusto FERREIRA DE ALMEIDA (1817-1900), 1st Count of Carvalhido A great philanthropist, the Count had done much for the Portuguese populations of Brazil. His services to Portugal were also the enrichment of the Lisbon Museum of Fine Arts with several spontaneous donations of paintings, which were transferred to a room named "Sala Conde de Carvalhido". These rooms were inaugurated by Dona Maria Pia in 1896. Later, he emigrated to France where he married for the second time Dona Helena Ana Maria Antónia Leichtinger, of Hungarian nationality,
