JEAN PAUL LAURENS, AFTER. FRENCH SCHOOL OF... - Lot 34 - Osenat
JEAN PAUL LAURENS, AFTER. FRENCH SCHOOL OF THE 20TH CENTURY. The Duke of Enghien, before his execution, in the moat of the Château de Vincennes Large oil on canvas 166 x 105 cm. (Re-finished, restorations and repaints). History: Laurens painted the original which is kept in the Musée d'Alençon. The composition is strong and historical: "Night scene, the night of 20 to 21 March 1804, a fateful place, the moat of the Château de Vincennes, a tragic moment, the death of a young man shot after a parody of a trial. The tight framing, the single source of light producing this gigantic shadow on the wall, the presence of the dog Mohilof, who we know howled at death on the grave in which his master was thrown, all contribute to the dramatization of the moment. Just like the dignity and courage of the condemned man whose last words were: "How awful it is to die at the hands of the French...".
