STAFF MAP. Topographical map of France. Dépôt... - Lot 25 - Osenat
STAFF MAP. Topographical map of France. Dépôt de la guerre, 1856-1870. 17 copper-engraved plates, each cut into 8 pieces and then cloth-backed and folded to small folio format with copper-engraved label of Jean-Julien Chilhaud-Dumaine's military library. The whole placed in an ornate red morocco spine case, with the mention "marshal-duc de Dalmatie" gilt on the tail, orange morocco paper cover on the boards with gilt roulette frame with floral motifs, spine spotting, 2 cracks on the inner part, some foxing (1830s). THE PART OF THIS MAP WHICH COVERS IN PARTICULAR THE BATTLES OF THE PYRENEES, ORTHEZ AND TOULOUSE where marshal Soult and general Reille fought the English on foot in 1814: Avignon (no. 222), Forcalquier (no. 223), Castellane (no. 224), Bayonne (no. 226), Orthez (no. 227), Castelnau (no. 228), Auch (no. 229), Toulouse (no. 230), Castre (no. 231, with some coloured lines added later), Bédarieux (n° 232), Montpellier (n° 233), Arles (n° 234), Aix-en-Provence (n° 235), Draguignan (n° 236), Antibes (n° 237), finally Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port (n° 238). BEGINNING TO APPEAR IN 1833 UNDER THE MINISTRY OF MARECHAL SOULT, this topographic map of France, usually called the "staff map", was one of the great cartographic undertakings of the 19th century. Launched in 1817 by royal decree to remedy the inadequacies of the Cassini map, it included 274 sheets at 1:80,000 scale, the last of which were not published until 1880, after a new revision carried out from 1840 to 1870. Marshal Soult, duke of Dalmatia ordered the present copy and had the slipcases made in his name (of which this is No. XIII) but it was after his death in 1851 that his son-in-law René Reille received the last maps and stamped them with his own name. René Reille was the son of Marshal Honoré-Charles Reille, who served in Spain and was placed under the orders of Marshal Soult in 1814.
