Marie-Madeleine in walnut carved in the round... - Lot 29 - Osenat
Marie-Madeleine in walnut carved in the round with traces of polychromy. Standing, she holds an open book in her left hand, she is dressed in a dress fitted to her bust and a large coat, held on the chest by a cord, one side of which returns to the front forming deep and voluminous folds, monoxyl reliquary base with a sun-shaped lunula. Burgundy, second third of the 15th century Height: 45.7 cm (some missing parts, notably the right arm holding the vase and the base) In several churches in Burgundy, we find myrophoric Mary Magdalene of the same typology as this one: standing, carrying a book in her right hand and the ointment jar in the other, wrapped in their ample mantle. One thinks in particular of the Mary Magdalene of the churches of Uchon (Saône-et-Loire) and Saussy (Côte d'or). They all seem to derive from the Marie-Madeleine kept in the Musée d'Autun (inv. ML 1301), which was formerly attributed to Claus de Werve, but which is now linked to Jean de la Huerta, a sculptor of Spanish origin who took over the construction of the tomb of John the Fearless in 1439 following the death of the great Burgundian master.
