She had a French garden laid out, with a small castle in the park, which very quickly became the menagerie, and a pavilion allowing the princess to admire the sea. Her rich collection of portraits is one of the most profound contributions to the castle. On his death, the county of Eu became the property of the Duke of Maine, son of Louis XIV and Madame de Montespan, his favourite. The predominant figure for the 18th century remains the Duke of Penthièvre. The latter, from 1775 to 1793, will do much for the maintenance of the domain. The castle is sequestered during the Revolution. On the death of his mother, it is to the Duke of Orleans, future King Louis-Philippe, that the domain of Eu returned. The new owner of the place is a passionate of architecture and history and it is with him that the estate will experience its greatest developments. As early as 1827, the architect Pierre-Léonard Fontaine began work to make the château more comfortable. The paintings inherited from the Grande Mademoiselle were restored and large orders were placed with the best houses of the time to furnish the château. After the abdication of Louis-Philippe in 1848, the estate was once again put into receivership.
