RARE PAIR OF SMALL CURVED WALL FALLS in painted and gilded w - Lot 262
RARE PAIR OF SMALL CURVED WALL FALLS in painted and gilded wood, the triangular backrest and the front uprights surmounted by balls resting on an x-shaped base decorated with a lion's head in a medallion and finished with dog heads, (painted and gilded restorations). Stamp of Georges Jacob, carpenter received master in 1765. Around 1790-1795. H: 64 cm, W: 55 cm, D: 44 cm This pair of curved armchairs stamped by Georges Jacob is an interesting contribution to the dating of the first seats of a model whose posterity is no longer to be demonstrated. A successful piece of furniture under the Consulate and the Empire, the very early dating of these seats allows us to consider them as part of the prototypes of the series. The final shape has not yet been determined, so these two seats are an intermediate stage before the stabilization of the well-known model with armrests in the extension of the seat, itself an element of the frame and connected by the armrest to the backrest. We had a drawing from the agency of Charles Percier and Pierre Fontaine, which is kept in a private collection in Paris (see fig. 1) and is traditionally dated 1797 by Hans Ottomeyer. It is probably a document communicated to Jacob's workshop by the architectural agency of the client for the design of a new type of furniture. In addition to this design, there was an interesting milestone in French furniture: the three mahogany armchairs stamped by Georges Jacob, delivered for the Tribunal de Cassation by 1795 at the latest and still kept at the Cour de Cassation in Paris (see fig. 2). The existence of these latter seats allowed J. P. Samoyault (J. P. Samoyault, Mobilier français Consulat et Empire, Paris, 2009, p. 27) to propose a new dating for the appearance of the curule model in the history of the neoclassical seat, the G stamp. Since Georges Jacob's IACOB stamp was not used after 1795, the model could not be considered later. Consequently, the design of the Percier et Fontaine agency probably
