Pierre-Je'ro^me LORDON (1780 - 1838) The Communion of Atala - Lot 45
Pierre-Je'ro^me LORDON (1780 - 1838) The Communion of Atala Original canvas Frame: Original frame (e'tiquette de Souty) Height: 67 cm Width: 87 cm Ancient restorations Pierre-Je'ro^me Lordon exhibited at the Salon of 1808 (No. 398) The Communion of Atala, preserved today in the villa. EECarlotta on the lake of Co^me, at the same time as Anne - Louis Girodet - Trioson (1767 - 1824) his Atala at the Tomb (Louvre). Chateaubriand's novel (1768 - 1848) was published in 1801 and was a great success and inspired many painters and sculptors, including those of the Romantic generation, such as Ary Scheffer and E. E. E. Delacroix, and this throughout the 19th century (see the catalogue of the exhibition "Soul from Europe's point of view"). Ch. XIV, Atala. Grand - Palais 1976). The two paintings by Girodet and Lordon focus on the most dramatic moment in Chateaubriand's work, revolving around the tragic love story between two Louisiana Indians: Atala and Chactas. Chactas is an Indian e'leve' and e'duque' by Spanish settlers. After spending many years learning and living with them, he feels a deep call to return to nature and starts looking for a better life. He is captured by an enemy tribe and meets the beautiful Atala, a beloved Indian woman. An ardent passion is born between the two and they decide to flee together into the forest. For unknown reasons, Atala does not give herself to Chactas and we only learn why when the two lovers meet in the forest with the missionary, Father Aubry. Atala's mother made a vow to the Virgin Mary that if she had a healthy daughter, despite the difficult pregnancy, the daughter would remain chaste. Terrified at the idea of breaking her mother's vow, Atala took poison and died to avoid the temptation of her love for Chactas. The scene, represented by Lordon, shows the last moments of Atala's life, receiving the communion of the hermit, Father Aubry, while Chactas, overwhelmed by despair, supports his body with love.
