CLAUDEL (Pau l). Signed autograph manuscript entitled "Le Repos du septième jour". "Shanghai 1895-Fou-Tchéou 1896". (1)-69 ff. in-folio, mounted on tabs on sheets of strong paper, the whole placed in a brown morocco box opening on two leaves with a title piece interlocking one into the other and the name of the author biting on both, all in cream letters, brick suede lining, cardboard case lined with a brown morocco title piece in cream, brown and black letters (Renaud Vernier 1994). A FABLE ABOUT THE ORIGIN OF EVIL AND THE THEOLOGICAL ESSENCE OF POLITICS. A symbolist, refined play set in ancient China, as it could emerge from Paul Claudel's readings, but also from his direct observations in this country where he arrived in 1895 as a diplomat. In Le Repos du septième jour, the first emperor of China, Tsin Shi Hoang (Qin Shi Huang), takes on the attributes of a Christic figure who redeems by his physical sacrifice the disorder and impiety of his subjects. This play would not be performed in France before 1965. SUPERB BOX OF RENAUD VERNIER, OF SUPREME ELEGANCE. JOINT : - CLAUDEL (Paul). The Tree. Paris, Société du Mercure de France, 1901. In-18, garnet-red half-maroquin with corners, ribbed back, gilt head, covers and back preserved (G. Huser). First collective edition, partly original, including LE REPOS DU SEPTIÈME JOUR EN ÉDITION ORIGINALE. - 2 modern works of documentation concerning this text, paperbacks.
