BRETON (André). Signed autograph poem entitled "La moindre rançon" (The Least Ransom), dated Port-au-Prince, February 15, 1946. 28 verses and 2 footnotes on a p. in-folio of tissue paper. SUPERB POEM OF LOVE TO HIS NEW PLACE, dedicated, in red ink, "Au pays d'Élisa", published in 1948 in the collection Xénophiles (Paris, Gallimard, Nrf ). The Chilean-born writer and artist Elisa Bindhoff met André Breton in New York in 1943, inspired him to write Arcane 17 in 1944, and married him in 1945. "You who gnaw the most fragrant leaf of the atlas Chile Butterfly Moon Caterpillar You whose entire structure marries The tender scar of the moon's break with the earth Chile of the snows Like the sheet that a beautiful woman throws away when she rises ... Grant the organ of my heart to the stridencies of the tall ships of stalactites Towards Cape Horn Chile Standing on a mirror And give me back what She alone holds The strand of mimosa still quivering in the amber Chile of the cateadores [gold seekers] Land of my love. »
