BRETON (André). Autograph poem entitled "L'an... - Lot 81 - Osenat
BRETON (André). Autograph poem entitled "L'an suave". 14 verses including one split in two, on a p. in-folio of grey-green imitation japanese. EXTREMELY RARE MALLARMÉAN POEM OF HIS SYMBOLIST YOUTH. Composed in August 1914, " L'An suave " is part of a series of seven poems which, written between 1914 and 1917, were sent by André Breton to friends such as Théodore Fraenkel and writers such as Guillaume Apollinaire and Paul Valéry. The latter, upon receiving this poem, was able to write "This sonnet [...] is a delicious artifice: it is a charming choice of his words. DEDICATED TO THE "MIRACULOUS NYMPH", "MADAME MARIE LAURENCIN". André Breton, who knew her then only through his works and as Apollinaire's companion, would dedicate the first of his critical essays to her and would remain faithful to this ancient admiration all his life. "« ... Have I omitted the miraculous nymph, Icarus with the snowy bushes, you know, among The gentle arrows - the sweet year what a friend! - And riddled with songs, by Echo, the silence... "This poem first appeared in August 1917 in the magazine Nord-Sud (n°6-7), then in 1919 in his first personal collection, Mont de piété (Paris, Au sans Pareil). In 1922, it was again included in the collective collection L'Éventail, illustrated by Marie Laurencin herself.
