GUIZOT (François). Correspondence of 4 letters (3 autographs signed, one signed) addressed as Minister of the Interior to Odilon Barrot, commissioner of the Government of Louis-Philippe to Charles X. Paris, 6-14 August 1830. PROTECT BUT WATCH OVER THE DEPOSED KING GOING INTO EXILE. François Guizot announces here the sending of 600,000 gold francs to Charles X (6 August), then worries about the slow progress of the latter towards Cherbourg and asks that the troop accompanying him be disarmed once his mission is accomplished (8 August), indicates that Charles X has dismissed his military escort with the exception of the Bodyguards and hastened his march towards Cherbourg (10 August), and finally worries that Charles X persists in wanting to disembark at Ostend (14 August). The liberal lawyer Odilon Barrot was a member of the provisional municipal commission which administered Paris from the July Revolution onwards. As Louis-Philippe's commissioner, he was responsible for accompanying Charles X to ensure that his departure into exile, from Rambouillet to his embarkation in Cherbourg, was carried out under conditions such that the security of his person was respected, as was that of the royal family and their retinue, but also that a possible legitimate attempt, whether or not encouraged by the deposed monarch, was prevented. In this task, which he accomplished perfectly, Odilon Barrot was assisted by two other commissioners, Nicolas-Joseph Maison (made marshal by Charles X in 1829) and the magistrate and deputy Auguste de Schonen, also a member of the provisional municipal commission of Paris. After the Revolutionary Days of 27, 28 and 29 July 1830, Louis-Philippe d'Orléans was appointed Lieutenant-General of the kingdom on 31 July, and on 1 August set up a provisional ministry including François Guizot as Minister of the Interior ("provisional commissioner to the Department of the Interior").
