FOUCAULD (Charles de). Set of 6 signed letters... - Lot 65 - Osenat
FOUCAULD (Charles de). Set of 6 signed letters and an autograph piece, addressed to canon Maxime Caron. Béni-Abbès, Tamanrasset, and "at the bottom of a gourbi" on the way between the two, in southern Algeria, 5 January 1907-2 August 1909. FATHER DE FOUCAULD LONGLY DETAILS HIS MISSIONARY ACTIVITY IN THE ALGERIAN DESERT: "The corner of the Sahara that I am the only one to clear is 2000 kilometers from North to South & 1000 from East to West, with one hundred thousand Muslims scattered in this space, without a Christian, if it is not the French military of all ranks, the latter are few in number, 80 or 100 scattered in this area.... "(Tamanrasset, June 9, 1908). He recalls the principles that guide him: " ... Let us return to the Gospel. If we do not live the Gospel, Jesus does not live in us. Let us return to poverty, to Christian simplicity... "(Tamanrasset, June 30, 1909). He also evokes his project of pious association, the Union of the Brothers and Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus (he encloses in this regard the copy of his hand of a letter of encouragement received from Léon Livinhac, Superior General of the White Fathers in Algiers), transmits the request of the Poor Clares of Nazareth to write the life of their Mother Foundress, etc. (Tamanrasset, June 30, 1909). Father Caron, with whom Father de Foucauld was linked, directed the minor seminary of Versailles and published many works of piety. ATTACHED: 3 letters and a card to Canon Caron, including one from the Abbess of the Poor Clares of Nazareth recalling the edifying stay that Father de Foucauld made in their community (1905, from a pencil note in another hand), and one from the Queen of Portugal, Amélie d'Orléans (1926). - A photographic portrait of Canon Caron.
