FABRE D'ÉGLANTINE (Philippe -Fra nçois-Nazaire Fabre , dit ). Autograph manuscript entitled "L'Aristocrate en convalescence ou le Convalescent de qualité" (title partially crossed out). 43 pp. in-folio in a notebook bound with a cord, upper margins wet and fringed with several lacks of text. Play premiered on January 28, 1791 at the Théâtre-italien, published the same year under the title Le Convalescent de qualité, ou l'Aristocrate. A LOVEFUL INTRIGUE ON THE BASIS OF SOCIAL AND POLITICAL MOVEMENTS: Fabre d'Églantine stages an old marquis burdened with debts who, reclusive by his doctor who fears for his health, belatedly discovers revolutionary events, and ends up agreeing to let his daughter marry the son of a rich farmer officer in the National Guard, taking him for an army colonel. The Quality Convalescent was a great success, one passage having been particularly applauded, the one where the doctor attacks the ministers and the Greats, "very divided among themselves, / But constantly united in a disastrous point, / In the infamous project of devouring France," while defending Louis XVI: "But for the present day, august Providence, / Wanted us to keep, in spite of you, a just king.
