In the title, the typographic mark of the publisher Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler is a woodcut by André Derain. "Humour, non-conformism, even lyricism, insofar as they constitute a homogeneous reality - that of Tristan Tzara's poetry - do not shirk from the powerful vicinity of the engravings. Gris brought his experiments in ink drawing to copper. With the sobriety that characterizes the productions of his last years, the illustrator uses the cross play of sizes without ever using any of those virtuoso effects to which the best aquafortist sometimes give way. Dominating the craft, the material, he confers to the silhouette of each character a quiet, almost monumental amplitude. Banners, still life, landscape, contribute to the refinement of this volume. Its small format, its illustrated cover, the choice of characters, the composition of the finished print, the printing of the ochre monochrome engravings, so many details which, when combined, show us that no cog in the wheel is indifferent in the ingenious gearing of the book" (François Chapon, "Livres de Kahnweiler", in Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler, marchand, éditeur, écrivain, Paris, Centre Georges Pompidou, 1984, p. 63).
