MARBOT (Marcellin de). Autograph letter signed to Eustache M - Lot 52
MARBOT (Marcellin de). Autograph letter signed to Eustache Marie Pierre Marc Antoine Courtin. Château du Rancy in Bonneuil-sur-Marne, "the 7th of December". 3 pp. in-12, address on the back, two marginal tears damaging some letters. "My dear companion, the title of my book is Remarks critiques sur l'ouvrage de Mr le gal Rogniat intitulé Considérations sur l'art de la guerre [The work of General Rogniat had appeared in 1817, having been republished in 1820, and the critical analysis of General Marbot was published in 1820].... THE PAST THAT CONCERNS ME IN THE TESTAMENT OF THE GREAT MAN IS THEREFORE CONCEIVED (article 34): "I LEGE TO COLONEL MARBOT ONE HUNDRED THOUSAND FRANKS. I urge him to continue to write the defense of the glory of the French armies, to confuse slanderers and apostates" ! WHY THE EMPEROR HAS APPOINTED ME GENNAPES THE VEI [THE] OF WATERLOO, I could not, when on our return from exile I had my book printed, take a title that the present Government is far from recognizing as belonging to me [it would only recover this rank under the July Monarchy]. I therefore took from the title of my book only the title of colonel, and I think that if H.M. designated me under this title, although she remembers very well that she made me g[ener]al, it was [above all] to avoid any discussion on the identity of the person, that in order not to call new persecutions upon me, by reviving the memories of certain people on the combat which had earned me from the Emperor a testimony of satisfaction and the rank of brigadier general.... "As an AUTHOR OF FAMOUS MEMORIES, GENERAL MARBOT also published other texts, including the article "Cavalry" in the Modern Encyclopedia edited by the lawyer and former high magistrate Courtin. Courtin, who had remained loyal to the imperial regime, had been exiled from 1815 to 1818.
