PRESENTS THE FUTURE Napoleon III to his friend Samuel CARTWRIGHT. Beautiful oval giltwood box, entirely and finely chiselled with a succession of foliage and flowers, with a bottom decorated with bouquets. Lid decorated with an oval miniature on ivory, representing the Emperor Napoleon I in front bust, in the uniform of a hunter on horseback, wearing the orders of the Legion of Honour and the Iron Crown, as well as the great cordon of the Legion of Honour, nicely decorated with a frame in relief representing a snake, engraved inside the lid "Presented to Samuel Cartwright Esc. By Louis Napoleon 1845". The miniature (not disassembled) would bear on the back a paper marked "Napoleon J.B. Garand Pinxt 1815". Goldsmith's mark of Charles Rawlins and William Sumner London 1858. Gross weight: 182g approx. B.E. Provenance: Christie's London sale, November 6, 2001, n°219. History: This miniature was offered in 1845 by Louis Napoleon Bonaparte, the future Emperor Napoleon III, then in exile, to one of his London friends, the banker Samuel Cartwright, who had it mounted on this superb box afterwards. The book "Napoleon in England" gives us some information about this friend of the Prince: "Another new friend was Mr. Samuel Cartwright who, many years before, had been a guest of the Prince Regent at Brighton, and had also been a friend of Joseph Bonaparte. Mr. Cartwright was an eccentric old gentleman and a bon viveur in the truest sense, his Sunday parties at his country house Nizells, near Tonbridge. Prince Louis and Prince Napoleon often visited Mr. Cartwright there, as well as at his London house in Burlington Street.
