Jean-Baptiste ISABEY (1767-1855). Emperor... - Lot 171 - Osenat
Jean-Baptiste ISABEY (1767-1855). Emperor Napoleon I in coronation garb. Oval miniature representing the Emperor in front bust wearing the large coat with the large necklace of the Order of the Legion of Honour. Signed in the centre on the right. Gold guilloche frame, decorated with a blue enamelled border. Presented on a blue velvet background in a gilded and green wooden frame. Miniature: 61 x 37 mm. With frame: 74 x 62 mm. With wooden frame : 7 x 7 cm. B.E. Provenance: Sale Sotheby's, Zurich, November 16, 1979. History: It is known that the miniaturist had a very important part in the coronation of the Emperor, whether in the conception of the ceremony, the elaboration of the outfits or in the major work he executed to fix the costumes worn that day, and which will be finished only at the 1st Restoration. In addition to being an official representation of the new Emperor, this performance is a source of pride for the artist since the subject wears a costume designed by him. The large necklace is the work of the goldsmith Biennais.
