Robert LEFEVRE (1755-1830). French school.... - Lot 152 - Osenat
Robert LEFEVRE (1755-1830). French school. Emperor Napoleon I in the uniform of a mounted hunter of the Guard in front bust, wearing the Legion of Honour and the Order of Reunion. Oil on rectangular canvas, oval view, signed on the left " Robert Lefevre Ft 1809 ". Wooden frame decorated with palmettes, caduceus and rosettes. Size : 65 x 54 cm. With frame : 87 x 76 cm. One restoration per piece, restoration at the level of the star of Reunion Island, which was painted at the time but later. B.E. Provenance: According to the notice published at the time of its purchase, the painting came from the collections of Prince Murat, then the collection of the Prince de Wagram, then the collection of Marguerite Marie Lina, known as Daisy Berthier de Wagram (1887-1966). It should be noted that the Princes of Wagram also kept a full-length portrait of the Emperor by Robert Lefevre, dated 1811. Related work: Robert Lefèvre, "L'Empereur Napoléon Ier dans son cabinet de travail". Painting commissioned for the Paris City Hall and kept at the Musée Carnavalet. This work was executed the same year as our bust portrait. We find several replicas of this commission for several palaces and official residences (one of his paintings is nowadays kept at Apsley House). Paradoxically, bust portraits of the Emperor by Robert Lefèvre are rarer. There are bust representations of the Guard (Versailles and Fontainebleau) in grenadier on foot and not as a hunter. History: In this bust portrait, the Emperor wears the uniform of the mounted hunters of the Imperial Guard, accompanied by the insignia of the Legion of Honour. He also wears the Order of Reunion, added to the canvas when the order was created in 1811, probably by Robert Lefevre himself.
