BERNARD BOUTET DE MONVEL (1881 - 1949) Portrait... - Lot 167 - Osenat
BERNARD BOUTET DE MONVEL (1881 - 1949) Portrait of mademoiselle Lise Brissaud around 1928 Watercolour and black pencil on strong paper signed lower right: " Bernard / B. de Monvel" 44 x 44 cm Daughter of Doctor Etienne Brissaud (1882 - 1951) - the brother of the illustrators and painters Jacques (1880 - 1960) and Pierre Brissaud (1885 - 1964) - and of Caroline Franck (1890 - 1950) - a relative of the composer César Franck - , granddaughter of Doctor Edouard Brissaud (1852 - 1909), the famous neurologist and pathologist who served as a model for Marcel Proust for Dr. Boulbon in La recherche du temps perdu and his wife Hélène Boutet de Monvel - a sister of the painter and illustrator Maurice Boutet de Monvel (1850 - 1913), Lise Brissaud (1910 - 1968) who became Mrs. Jean Berveiller by marriage and was therefore a first cousin of Bernard Boutet de Monvel. This delicate watercolour portrait, painted around 1928 when the young girl was about to enter the world, takes up a pose and a technique that the painter was particularly fond of at the end of the twenties and in which he represented Mrs. Jules Glaenzer, the very glamorous wife of the director of the Cartier firm in New York. Probably painted in Nemours, our portrait shows the model in front of a small work table Restoration appearing on another watercolour by the artist showing his wife also in profile: Delfina in front of Sylvie's cradle (Sotheby's, 5 and 6 April 2016, n°124) A certificate from Mr. Stéphane-Jacques Addade will be given to the purchaser.
