Jean-Baptiste ISABEY (1767-1855). The First... - Lot 5 - Osenat
Jean-Baptiste ISABEY (1767-1855). The First Consul Bonaparte, in front bust, in uniform embroidered with gold of President of the Cisalpine Republic (1802-1805). Oval miniature signed lower right. Under glass. Gilt and chased brass frame. 61 x 45 mm. With frame : 78 x 63 mm. B.E. Provenance : To old Russia, New-York, December 1st 1970. History: The image of Bonaparte's face is here still that of the young victorious general of Italy, with a piercing look and a dry face. Isabey declined this face in several representations, until the coronation, in the uniform of President of the Cisalpine Republic, in the uniform of Member of the Institute, of Colonel of the Grenadiers on foot of the Consular Guard and finally in the Sacred dress (for an example of these last two representations, see the snuffboxes preserved at the NAPOLÉON Foundation). It is from the coronation that the imperial image is smoothed, both to serve the imperial image and to fit the physiognomy of NAPOLÉON. Biography: Jean-Baptiste Isabey is a painter born in Nancy in 1767, was in this city the pupil of Claudot and Girardet, painters of the King of Poland, and in Paris the pupil of David, of whom he became a friend. On the advice of Mirabeau, he devoted his talent to miniature painting, and was the first of his kind. He became master of drawing for Empress Marie-Louise, painter of the cabinet of Napoleon I and organizer of court festivities and ceremonies. He was commissioned by Prince de Talleyrand to go to Vienna in 1814, and executed the great drawing called "The Congress of Vienna". Appointed by Charles X, in 1825, painter of the King's cabinet, and by Louis-Philippe, in 1850, honorary curator of museums, he was made Commander of the Legion of Honour by Napoleon III, and died in 1855.
