Jean Baptiste Jacques AUGUSTIN (1752-1839) Exceptional and important notebook of drawings and sketches, bound in green canvas, with label of Alphonse Giroux, rue du Faubourg Saint Honoré n°7 in Paris. It contains : -37 preparatory drawings in black pencil, including some watercolours, more or less completed, and 16 small sketches in black pencil. The majority are annotated, five are signed and three are monogrammed. We enclose: -A catalogue of the cabinet of Mr. Augustin, miniature painter. By Ch. Paillet of the Royal Museum in Paris. Imp. Delauchy 1839. -A list of drawings concerning the notebook. Three typed pages. -8 pencil pages with the names of Augustin's portraits, probably handwritten pages, including one on a letter from the framer Giroux, enriched with a fine pencil drawing by Augustin representing a naked woman lying down. B.E. Provenance: Collection John Pierpont Morgan then collection Mitchell Samuels on November 30, 1988. History: The notebook is an exceptional document on the artist's work (concentrating on uniforms and bodies, faces are rarely sketched) and the identification of Augustin's subjects. Some are identified M de Ferrir, Spaniard, The Hope, The Duke of Berry, Mrs Rhyncre, Count Thibault de Montmorency, Mrs Rapp, Marshal Victor on foot, the mouth of Marshal Suchet a Russian prince with a study of his watercolour decorations, Mrs Patle de Calcuta, Lady Stanley. A very beautiful study of Princess Galitzine and her daughter is partially enhanced with ink. Some of them are based on Gerard's compositions such as General Auguste de Colbert-Chabannais or Madame Récamier. Some with the artist's annotation "the head is big for the body", "Made at the opera while the dancer was doing a pirouette". For the list of portraits, let us note some names: - Jacob, cabinetmaker. - Princess Galitzine. - Sicard. This would be the list of portraits made before Augustine's marriage, before July 1800.
