Box in tortoiseshell and ivory marquetry,... - Lot 225 - Osenat
Box in tortoiseshell and ivory marquetry, decorated with foliage and bird foliage scrolls, with gilt and silvered bronze hinges with motifs of female busts and mascaron in surrounds of garlands of foliage and animals. Attributed to Jean Armand (circa 1600-1670). Circa 1650-1660 (accidents and misses). H: 16.5 cm, W: 35 cm, D: 24 cm Bibliography: C. Demetrescu, Jean Armand, a cabinetmaker rediscovered in the time of Louis XIV, sd (www.istoria-artei.ro) Calin Demetrescu constitutes a group of three objects, from which we can compare an armoured box in tortoiseshell and ivory marquetry, most probably belonging to Gaston d'Orléans and most probably made by his appointed cabinetmaker Jean Armand. It is a cabinet of royal provenance kept at the Museum of Art and History of Saint-Denis, as well as a pair of frames recently sold at public sale and the box presented here.
