Rare tapestry panel from the Marche (France)... - Lot 210 - Osenat
Rare tapestry panel from the Marche (France) from the middle of the 16th century, belonging to a series of tapestry hangings on the subject of the history of Hester. The cartoons of this suite seem to be related to the work of the French engraver Etienne Delaune (1518-1583), as well as to the drawings of the Flemish J. Stradanus (1523-1605). Similar tapestries were also woven in Flanders and Holland. Our panel contains inscriptions naming the characters depicted, such as Vashtiy, the first wife of King Ahasuerus, himself depicted on the left of the panel. The border was brought back in the 19th century. The presence of the inscriptions and their type suggests that it is possible that the hanging was originally woven for a Yiddish-speaking notable. 285 x 315 cm
