An amaranth chest of drawers with an animated... - Lot 149 - Osenat
An amaranth chest of drawers with an animated shape, the front opening with four drawers in three rows separated by brass rods, the top of Breche d'Alep marble (restored) resting on curved uprights ending with curved legs adorned with espagnolettes looking at each other, the lower drawer with a cut-out and a re-entrant table framed by horns of plenty with gadroons in relief. Stamped IMC probably for Jean-Mathieu Chevallier, cabinetmaker received master in 1743. Louis XV period (restorations). H: 86 cm, W: 129 cm, D: 63 cm A comparable chest of drawers but with a more pronounced cut-out in the lower drawer was sold in Paris, Ader study on December 2, 2019. If several cabinetmakers such as Etienne Doirat, François Lieutaud or Louis Simon Painsun also made very similar pieces of furniture, it is interesting to note that a chest of drawers with the same offcuts, the same lock entries and an identical decorative system to the lower drawer bears the stamp of François Mondon (Paris sale, Castor and Hara study, March 9, 2018, lot 312). A very similar chest of drawers also bears the IMC stamp (Lille sale, Mercier study, 3 June 2012, lot 528), generally considered a second stamp by Jean Mathieu Chevallier, is also listed. This chest of drawers as well as the chest of drawers presented were either made by Jean Mathieu Chevallier himself, or he only intervened as a merchant, in which case the manufacturer could possibly be François Mondon.
