An important pair of bronze groups with a... - Lot 71 - Osenat
An important pair of bronze groups with a brown patina representing Reason (as Apollo) and the People (as Jupiter) striking Religion and Aristocracy, inscribed Chinard and indistinctly Ch in Rome 1791 Mid 19th century. Apollo, H: 50 cm Jupiter, H: 48.5 cm These two groups, whose terracotta tiles signed and dated Ch. in Rome, 1791 are today kept in the Musée Carnavalet in Paris (purchased in 1892), were originally designed by Joseph Chinard (1756-1813) as bases for candelabra. They were worth Chinard being imprisoned for obvious political reasons in Rome at the Castel Saint Ange for two months. It is interesting to note that two identical plaster casts were donated in the 19th century by the collector Philippe Burty (1830-1890) to the Carnavalet Museum and deposited in the Louvre in 1934. While it is certain that the two terracotta pieces are indeed the original model of our bronzes, it is also very likely that the two plaster casts were made at a date that is difficult to determine.
