LOUIS XIV. Works of Louis XIV. Paris, Strasbourg, Treuttel - Lot 10
LOUIS XIV. Works of Louis XIV. Paris, Strasbourg, Treuttel and Würtz, 1806, 6 vol. in-8, fawn calf, smooth spine, red morocco title coin, guilloche cuts (rel. of the period). Despite its flaws, this is the first collective publication of Louis XIV's writings, given by Grouvelle and General de Grimoard, depositary of the papers handed over by Louis XVI in 1786 for this undertaking. This edition is neat, and generally does not deserve the disdain that surrounded it the critics of the twentieth century. It is organized as follows: I. Historical and political memoirs: volumes I & II, [26] ff. n. ch. (false-title, title, chirography), 220-232- [4] pp., with a portrait-frontispiece engraved by Alexandre Tardieu after Mignard, under serpent, and 23 facsimiles of writing in folding, [4]-502 pp. It is in this section that we find the famous Memoirs for the Instruction of the Dauphin, which is the best known, if not the most important piece, having been composed in a very irregular manner for the years 1661-1668 only. - II. Memoirs and military pieces: volumes III & IV ([4]-542 and [4]-488 pp.). - III. Private letters from 1659 to 1680 (volume V, [4]-596 pp.). - IV. Private letters from 1682 to 1714, literary opuscules, historical pieces (volume VI, [4]-559 pp.).
