MEN'S WATCH WITH KEY. Gold case with guilloché decoration. T - Lot 12
MEN'S WATCH WITH KEY. Gold case with guilloché decoration. The dial, with silver amati decoration. Gold needles. Movement signed "Giteau, Eve de Breguet, Palais Royal N 140" and "N.2842". Punch "ox head", 1822-1838. First half of the 19th century. Gross weight: 40 g. Diameter: 42 mm. Thickness: about 0.8 cm. oxidations Pierre GITEAU, watchmaker patented by the King, was a pupil of Breguet and active in Paris from 1811-1870. This very flat pocket-watch model is similar to the creations of the famous Swiss watchmaker Abraham Louis BRÉGUET (Neuchâtel, 1747 - Paris, 1823). Indeed, the flat case with guilloché decoration is found on several of the master's creations as well as the gold hallmark on the head of the ox, proof of the contemporary nature of the creations. Bréguet gave watchmaking its letters of nobility and considerably developed its technique through numerous inventions. With clients as far back as Louis XVI and Marie-Antoinette, and with only four thousand creations, Bréguet would long influence the 19th century both technically and stylistically. It is therefore understandable that Giteau, his pupil, was largely inspired by his master's famous amati and off-centre dial, but also kept its fine hands. Giteau also produced subject and urn-shaped clocks under the Restoration.
