RUSSIA (Campaign of). - 29th Bulletin of... - Lot 99 - Osenat
RUSSIA (Campaign of). - 29th Bulletin of the Grande Armée (excerpt from the Moniteur of 17 December 1812). Paris, from the printing house of Chaigneau aîné,[1812]. 4 pp. printed on an in-4 bifold, two small angular gaps, stamped with the imperial eagle later affixed in the margin. The last bulletin of the Russian campaign, dated 3 December 1812 in Molodetschno. Two days before leaving what was left of the Grand Army to return to France, Napoleon I decided to narrate the current rout himself, so as not to leave the initiative to his opponents or to the public rumour: although in an uninitiated martial style, he hides nothing of it: "This army, so beautiful on 6 November, was very different from the 14th, almost without cavalry, without artillery, without transport". It relates the arrival of the cold, the departure of Smolensk, the various battles, the heroic breakthrough of Marshal Ney surrounded, the passage of Berezina, the harassment by Cossack troops, the disorganization of the army despite the excellent uniform of the Guard, the formation of the "sacred squadron", and justifies the choice of the Vilnius road
