FOREY (Élie-Frédéric). Signed autograph letter to Mr. Chapuis. Casteggio[5 km from Montebello], 26 May 1859. 2 pp. 1/2 in-8, name of the recipient scratched on the first page but not on the second. Montebello (east of Voghera), where the future Marshal Lannes had won a famous battle in 1800, was the site of another French victory on 20 May 1859, won by the future Marshal Forey. "I was very sensitive to... your letter of congratulations on our beautiful Montebello affair, twice illustrated in this century by our weapons, was at my heart - I had sought to animate our young soldiers with the ardour of their fathers and I was happy enough to have succeeded. They held me to what I expected from them and I owe them the best day of my life. I don't have time to write to you at length - the Monitor must have given you the details of that day - I will only add that I assessed the enemy forces well below what they really were based on all the information collected since, and it was not less than 25,000 men that my 3 to 4,000 at most had to do - and despite this disproportionate force, they retreated in such disorder that if I had had some fresh supplies on hand, I took many men and guns from them. And in their Bulletin they have the nerve to say that they have withdrawn before much higher forces... I reviewed my division's review and distributed the awards I had asked the emperor for and they were all granted to me by His Majesty... »
