MONTMORIN (Armand-Marc de). A document signed as Minister of Foreign Affairs, countersigned by the publisher Charles-Joseph Panckoucke (Paris, 12 November 1789, 4 pp. in-folio) and 3 letters signed at the Panckoucke (16 June-1 July 1790, in all about 4 pp. in-folio). Treaty authorizing and helping Panckoucke to publish a new periodical, Courrier patriote or Moniteur universel. Concessionaire of the Gazette de France since before the Revolution, it was subject to "competition from a large number of new newspapers and papers of all kinds, which were established in favour of press freedom, and several of which took over the new policies that had been exclusively reserved for it. "He therefore took the lead in responding to this competition and obtained satisfaction from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which was responsible for the Gazette de France. The Universal Monitor was a lasting success and was published until 1901. The letters concern the management of the Gazette de France
