LEFEBVRE-DESNOUETTES (Charles). 2 signed autographed letters. 1808. - To Marshal Jean-Baptiste Bessières, with an autographed apostille signed by him. Zaragoza, August 9, 1808: "We have not yet received the orders that General Monthion[François-Gédéon Bailly de Monthyon] announces to us, and it has been 60 hours since his letter arrived. We continue to occupy in the city the land we took on the 4th: we are advancing even, but slowly because we have been forced to retreat to every point, in the streets and in the houses. Almost all of our wounded have been evacuated to Tuedéla[Tudela]: I have taken steps to have them transported to Pamplona. We are waiting for the ammunition we requested at this place. As soon as they arrive, we will put more vigour into our attacks. In the meantime, we will move forward as much as possible. Yesterday, the enemy arrived on the left bank of the Ebro and occupied some fine positions. He thinks he's taking us away from our object, but we continued our operations.... " (1 p. 3/4 in-folio). The Marshal wrote: "Report to the Emperor, draft decree... "Wounded on August 4 in an assault in Zaragoza, General Lefebvre-Desnouettes was to be promoted to divisional rank and recalled to Paris on August 28. - To Napoleon I. Paris, October 21, 1808: "My aides de camp, Captains Dumas and Casabianca made themselves commendable for their services, actions & injuries. I dare ask Your Majesty to deign to allow them to take their place in His Guard. The bravery with which they have consistently demonstrated makes them worthy of being likened to the brave men Your Majesty honours with this award.... "Attached, an engraved portrait of General Lefebvre-Desnouettes.
