JOURDAN ( Jean-Baptiste). Autograph letter... - Lot 19 - Osenat
JOURDAN ( Jean-Baptiste). Autograph letter signed as Chief General of the Sambre-et-Meuse army, addressed to the future Marshal François-Joseph Lefebvre. Herve[east of Liege], 2 vendémiaire year III[23 September 1794]. 1/2 p. in-folio, printed header "Jourdan, commander in chief of the army of Sambre-et-Meuse" illustrated with a woodcut vignette representing the Republic, some freckles, some tears, especially due to the opening. "It would be appropriate, my comrade, to make sure if Clerfayt's army is still in Bolduc[Drink the Duke, by partly erroneous translation for Herzogenrath], as you announce it to me, and to have it recognized if it would be possible for you to take a position on the side of Kerckrode[Kerkrade] opposite Boleduc. You'll answer me as soon as possible. Hello and fraternity.... "The army of Sambre-et-Meuse, led by the future Marshal Jourdan, was then fighting the Austrian army of the Count of Clerfayt, Sébastien Charles de Croix, winning for the time being some successes such as the victories of Sprimont (18 September 1794) and Aldenhoven (2 October 1794). François-Joseph Lefebvre was then in command of the 2nd division of the Sambre-et-Meuse army, stationed around the castle of Neubourg in the current commune of Gulpen, between Maastricht and Aachen.
