CHAPTAL ( Jean-Antoine). Signed autograph letter to a "very dear colleague". S.l., November 13, 1787. 3/4 pp. in-4. Beautiful letter from the chemist and future politician, concerning his "Observations on the distillation of wines in the province of Languedoc", published in 1788 in the Collection of Acts of the Royal Society of Sciences of Montpellier, and on his Observations on some of the advantages that can be derived from ochreous soils, with the means to convert them into red brown, and to form pozzolans suitable for replacing foreign and national economies, printed in 1787 by Firmin Didot for the Languedoc States. "I have the honour to send you... a copy of my work on ochres that the province kindly had printed at Didot. Please reserve 10 minutes for me in your company's public meeting, I will read a memorandum on the distillation of wines of interest to science and administration, as I will leave tomorrow for Toulouse where I will be until the States[until the Languedoc States session], please inform your Academy... "It is most probably addressed to the astronomer and physicist Jacques Poitevin, a member of the Royal Society of Sciences of Montpellier, who published in 1773 a "Mémoire sur l'effervescence et la chaleur du vin dans la fermentation spiritueuse". Jean-Antoine Chaptal would help to revive the Montpellier Academy of Sciences in 1795
