CHABOT (François). Signed autograph letter to his mother. Luxembourg Prison, 28 Nivôse an II-17 January 1794. 4 pp. in-4. Superb and long letter from the conventional prison, which would be guillotined three months later. Capuchin converted to new ideas and became curate of Abbot Gregory in Blois, he adopted an extremist position, refusing for example to oppose the massacres of September 1792, or actively participating in the accusation of the Girondins. He was the first to use the expressions "sans-culottes" and "muscadins". Nevertheless, corrupt and speculative, he was imprisoned in Luxembourg, convicted at the same time as Danton and Camille Desmoulins, and then guillotined. Firm in his revolutionary convictions, François Chabot convenes here with a certain cuisine the authorities of Democritus, Epictète, Socrates or Montaigne, to support his response to his mother's reproaches on the troubles he has attracted to himself by his "carelessness", and which have also reached his family:"... The fools must break down the doors to bring the wise into the House of Liberty, and I reminded you of all the madness I did in Rodès, St-Geniès and even Toulouse, all of which served the cause of freedom, not to mention all of those I did in the legislature, and my madness of July 1792 which saved the freedom of the press, and my madness of August 8 and 9[1792] which overthrew the throne and that of May 31 for which Camboulas and Lanjuinais[the conventional Simon Camboulas d'Esparou and Jean-Denis Lanjuinais] wanted to send me to the guillotine and which delivered the Republic from the brissotins. Well, I told you, "when I wouldn't have been so happy against the two factions of the ultra- and citra-revolutionaries, my intentions would still be justified by my old follies that I think I have been useful".
