Catherine of Württemberg. Autograph letter... - Lot 9 - Osenat
Catherine of Württemberg. Autograph letter signed "Catherine" to Empress Josephine. Napoleonshöhe Castle[near Cassel], 13 August 1809. 2 pp. in-4 on fine vellum paper with embossed frieze frame and blue border. Beautiful letter from the Queen of Westphalia, wife of Jérôme Bonaparte. While Napoleon I was campaigning in Austria (he would stay there until the end of October), Josephine came to Strasbourg and then took the waters at Plombières, where she met her daughter Hortense de Beauharnais, wife of the King of Holland Louis Bonaparte, and Catherine de Wurtemberg, among others. The empress would not leave the water city until August 18. "My dearest sister! I wanted to wait to write to you that I was certain that Your Majesty would return to Paris, but I found this interval too long and I could not resist more to the desire to give you my news, and to ask you for some of yours. Unfortunately, the distance that separates us does not allow me to receive them very fresh or to be aware of your progress. The rumours are contradictory on the emperor's much desired return to Paris, so it is quite possible that you may also change your determination no matter where you live, wanted, my dear sister, to keep me a memory and a friendship that are very dear to me and very precious. King[Jerome], who is entirely attached and devoted to you, asks me to express to you the tender and affectionate attachment he has kept to his beloved sister. He hopes, my good sister, to always find in you the feelings on which you have allowed us to rely and which we both know so well how to appreciate. I have just written to the Emperor for the feast of August 15[Saint Napoleon's Day], we celebrate it here as well as the local allows, but never as much as our hearts would like. Please remind me of the Queen of Holland. I have just received, my dear sister, your letter of August 7, I will hasten to do what you want by sending you the roses, and I will be very happy if I see them in your garden
