(Small gaps) Biography: Coming from a wealthy bourgeois family, she ran a salon from 1749 onwards, despite her commonplace origins, which for twenty-five years was one of the main "offices of mind" in Paris, such as those of Mmes de Lambert, Tencin and Le Deffand.
