HUMBOLDT (Wilhelm von). Confidential memorandum... - Lot 444 - Osenat
HUMBOLDT (Wilhelm von). Confidential memorandum submitted by the Baron of Humbold[sic], Minister Plenipotentiary of the King of Prussia. Manuscript. [Vienna],[1815]. In-folio (39.3 x 25.8 cm) of 11 pp. on 3 double sheets. Important memorandum evoking the relations between France and the Allied Powers. Brother of the famous naturalist and traveller Alexander von Humboldt, Wilhelm von Humboldt (1767-1835) was a Prussian philosopher, linguist, diplomat and statesman. In 1810, he founded the University of Berlin, which today bears his name. Prussian Ambassador to Austria, he participated in the Congress of Vienna in 1814-1815, which decided on the new contours of Europe after the Napoleonic Wars. This manuscript, here as a period copy, was written after Louis XVIII's return to Paris (July 8, 1815). It is a response to the brief of Count Capo d'Istria (Ioannis Kapodistrias), a member of the Russian delegation to the Congress of Vienna, who advocated the payment by France of a large war indemnity in exchange for maintaining its territorial unity. Very readable document. Crumpled edges with sb. small tears
