Auguste BARRE, next. "Emperor Napoleon III"... - Lot 442 - Osenat
Auguste BARRE, next. "Emperor Napoleon III" Bust in patinated bronze plaster, marked on the front "NAPOLEON III" on the side "A. BARRE Fit 1852". 60 x 35 cm. Provenance: This plaster comes from Xavier UHLMANN, footman of the Imperial Prince. Biography: Xavier Uhlmann (1828-1904) entered the Tuileries at the beginning of 1857 as a footman: first a bailiff in the Emperor's cabinet for a few months, then he was attached to the person of the heir to the throne, the Imperial Prince. Promoted to valet, he became a valet with Napoleon III in 1867 for a year before being appointed personal valet of the Imperial Prince: until his death in 1879, he remained in his service as his first valet, companion in exile in England, he was the only person the Prince accepted to accompany him on the (last) trip to South Africa. He then served as treasurer of Empress Eugenie and steward of the imperial estate of Farnborough Hill until his own death.
