Ary-Arnold SCHEFFER (1839-1873) "Portrait of Emmanuel DAGUILHON-PUJOL in uniform as captain of the foot artillery of the Imperial Guard, wearing the insignia of the Legion of Honour, the Order of the Medjidié (Ottoman Empire) and the Crimean medal. Biography: Pierre Calixte Emmanuel Daguilhon-Pujol (1828-1912) Emmanuel Daguilhon-Pujol, born in Lavaur on 26 January 1828, studied secondary school in Toulouse and prepared for the entrance exam to the Ecole Polytechnique, where he was admitted second in a class of 122 students on 1 November 1848. Admitted 5th out of 43 in the artillery officers corps, he was appointed sub-lieutenant student at the Metz artillery application school on 1 October 1850. He left on 1 October 1852 as second lieutenant, and was assigned on 11 December of the same year to the 7th artillery regiment (1st battery), then on 6 March 1854 to the 16th horse artillery regiment. Promoted to lieutenant, he was assigned on February 3, 1855 to the 14th Horse Artillery Regiment and shortly thereafter, on March 14, 1855, to the Imperial Guard Foot Artillery Regiment, a highly sought-after elite unit. During the Crimean War, during the siege of Sevastopol, he commanded a battery of the Imperial Guard Artillery Regiment belonging to the division of the Corps commanded by General Regnault of Saint-Jean d'Angély. Returning on 18 December 1855 as battery commander of the Imperial Guard's foot artillery regiment, he was knighted of the Legion of Honour on 21 February 1856 for his very fine conduct in the Crimea, then received on 11 August 1856 the 5th class decoration of the Turkish Order of Medjidié, and promoted on 13 March 1857 to the rank of second in command.
