Alphonse de Tombay (1843-1918) after Charles Emile Marie Seurre (1798-1858), Portrait at the foot of Napoleon Bonaparte as a corporal, wearing a patinated terracotta frock coat, it stands on a square base. Signed, located in Liege and dated 1836 (accidents and restorations) H : 118 cm Provenance: probably from the old collection of the Ateliers Picot - Brocard 421. Antoine Denis CHAUDET (1763-1810), after The Emperor Napoleon I in a hermetically sealed bust. Sign on the right side "Canova fecit in Roma 1811". Official model made under the empire, mostly in Italy in the quarries of Carrara. Napoleon I had given his sisters, Elisa Grand Duchess of Tuscany and Pauline Borghese permission to produce these busts in large numbers around 1808-1810. They represented the members of the imperial family. High quality model. Marble of Carrara. (Small accident and restoration by ear) First half of the 19th century 60 x 31 x 26 cm 3 000/5 000 € In 1831, Louis-Philippe wanted to rally the Bonapartistes to his camp and organised a competition for a sculpture of Napoleon, to be placed at the top of the Vendôme column. Commissioned by the Ministry of the Interior on 17 June 1831 for 60,000 francs (including execution and installation costs). The sculptor Charles Emile SEURRE won the competition and the commission. The sculpture in stone of Seurre must have been used as a model to make the final bronze 4 meters high, cast by Crozatier. This monumental sculpture of Napoleon as a corporal was placed on the column on July 28, 1833 in the presence of Louis-Philippe. A stone copy of this same iconography was shown at the April 2009 exhibition in New York at the Botanical Gardens Antiques Furniture Show. Alphonse de Tombay, born in Liege on November 9, 1843, son and grandson of sculptors from Liege, learned the craft in the father's workshop and joined the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Liege where he benefited in particular from the advice of Prosper Drion.
