Desaix de Veygoux (Louis-Charles Antoine), general officer, born at the Château d'Ayat (Puy-de-Dôme), on 17 August 1768, of "Gilbert-Antoine Desaix, Lord of Veygoux, and Amable de Beaufranchet", entered Effiat College on October 18, 1776, was appointed in 1784, second lieutenant in the Brittany Infantry Regiment, became Mathieu Dumas' aide de camp on November 24, 1791 and then Broglie's aide de camp on June 1, 1792. He was in charge of the defence of Worms in 1793, became Adjutant General, Battalion Commander on May 20, 1793, contributed to the capture of the Haguenau lines, was promoted to Brigadier General, then became Vendémaire 29, Year II, Provisional Division General, and was suspended by Bouchotte as an emigrant's relative. He was confirmed in his rank of division general on 13 fructidor, seized Franckendal on 18 Vendémiaire year III and became the commander of the head of the Kehl bridge, which he valiantly defended. In an exit he made, he was slightly injured. After the peace of Campo-Formio, Desaix was appointed second general of the British army and took command in Bonaparte's absence. Desaix followed him to Egypt, contributed to his first successes and had to fight Murder-Bey relentlessly. It was Desaix who, after Bonaparte's departure, signed El-Arich's treaty. Back in France, he joined the First Consul in the Italian army and was given command of two divisions. Arrived at Marengo by a ten league forced march and despite an artillery that threw death into its ranks, it formed into columns by battalion and turning to the right, completely cut off the Austrian left wing. It was in this decisive and glorious moment that Desaix was hit with a ball and expired on the 25th prairial
