Jean-Baptiste-Joseph DE BAY Père (1779-1863), after Bust of Monsignor Duvoisin, Bishop of Nantes, chaplain of Empress Marie-Louise, wearing the insignia of the Order of Reunion. Rare bronze patinated plaster signed and dated on the back "DEBAY 1813" and titled on the left side: "JB. (small ginning) 1st half of the 19th century Biographies: Jean-Baptiste DUVOISIN, born on 19 October 1744 in Langres and died on 9 July 1813, was a French dignitary of the Catholic Church, bishop of the diocese of Nantes from 1802 until his death. Jean-Baptiste Duvoisin received his first degree in Sorbonne and was soon entrusted with a chair of theology in the same school, then he was chosen as Grand Vicar by the Bishop of Laon. He was exiled in 1792 as a refractory priest, returned to France after the Concordat of 1801, and soon attracted the attention of Napoleon I, who appointed him Bishop of Nantes on 5 July 1802 and placed his full trust in him: he was one of the four bishops in charge of residing near Pius VII during his stay in Savona and Fontainebleau, then became Confessor to Empress Marie-Louise. Jean Baptiste Joseph DE BAY, known as Jean Baptiste Joseph DE BAY père or Jean Baptiste Joseph De Bay l'Ancien, (1779-1863), is a Flemish, then Belgian sculptor, active in Paris. He is the father of the sculptor Jean-Baptiste Joseph Debay (1802- 1862), known as Debay fils, and the sculptor and painter Auguste-Hyacinthe Debay (1804- 1865). A student of the sculptor Antoine-Denis Chaudet, Jean Baptiste Joseph De Bay made statues of historical figures as well as a number of busts. Several of his works are on display at the Château de Versailles, the Louvre Museum in Paris, the Musée des beaux-arts de Nantes, the Musée des beaux-arts d'Angers and the Musée des beaux-arts de Bordeaux.
