Daniel SAINT, attributed to." Empress Josephine. "Oval miniature on ivory representing the Empress of ¾ in profile, wearing the crown and a necklace of fine pearls. On the reverse, mother-of-pearl plaque with the inscription "Gift of Impce Josephine 1808 to Alexe Lenoir." Spindle mounted with safety chain. 5.3 x 4 cm. B.E. Period I Empire. 6 000/8 000 € to alexandre lenoir Biography: Alexandre Lenoir French Archaeologist (Paris 1761-Paris 1839). First a painter, he had the idea, during the Revolution, to gather in Paris the monuments that the suppression of convents exposed to destruction. The depot organized by him at Les Petits-Augustins was erected as a museum of French Monuments in 1796. He restored various royal tombs of Saint-Denis. He will be the curator of the Musée des Petits Augustins and will still devote himself to many rescues, including the church of Cluny Abbey, Cambrai Cathedral and the facades of Anet and Gaillon castles. Supported in his action under the Empire (he advised Empress Josephine in his embellishment work in Malmaison), Alexandre Lenoir was the first to play a leading role in bringing medieval art up to date. Lenoir had Josephine's protection and had composed an "Epistle dedicated to Her Majesty the Empress and Queen". Lenoir painted a picture of the sharing of the Malmaison's works of art and antiques at the time of the Empress' death.
