Louis Leopold BOILLY (1761-1845) "Portrait of Marie Joseph Baron de Gazan (1785-1849), in the uniform of a lieutenant colonel of the infantry. "Oil on its original canvas (small restorations that do not touch the subject). 22 x 16 cm. Gilded frame with palmettes. B.E. 1815. Biography: Marie-Joseph GAZAN (1785-1849) Entered the Fontainebleau special school in 1804, he served in the Napoleonic armies as a second lieutenant and then captain, in Austria (1805), Prussia (1806), Poland 1807, Spain (1808-1812) and Germany (1813). He was wounded five times, in Eylau, Talavera, Chiclana, Dresden, and his conduct in Spain as well as at the Battle of Leipzig earned him the cross of membership and then the officer of the Legion of Honour. At the Restoration, he obtained the lieutenancy of the Sainte-Marguerite Islands, then was employed at the headquarters of the Paris market (1821). He was then made a colonel, and elevated to the rank of baron (1824). Under the July monarchy, promoted camp marshal (brigadier general, 1835) then lieutenant-general (division general, 1845), he commanded in particular in Ancona (1835-1839) and was appointed head of the Directorate of Military Personnel and Operations at the Ministry of War (1845-1848)
