[CAMBACERATORS] SCHLÖZER (Christian von).... - Lot 223 - Osenat
[CAMBACERATORS] SCHLÖZER (Christian von). Introduction to the science of statistics, followed by a general overview of the entire study of politics, its course and divisions, based on German (...), with a preliminary speech, additions and remarks, dedicated to H.S.H. Bishop Cambaceres, Arch Chancellor of the Empire, by Denis-François Donnant (...). Paris, Imprimerie Impériale, year XIII - 1805, in-8,[4]-X-248-[1] pp., cherry chevrette, smooth back decorated with golden fillets and small fleurons, triple golden garland frame on the plates, golden number pushed on the plates, golden dotted line on the cups, golden slices, inner lace, fenders lined with blue tabis (period binding). One of the first statistical books. Son of the famous orientalist August Ludwig von Schlözer, Christian von Schlözer (1774-1831) taught political science in Bonn and Moscow. The translator, Denis-François Donnant (born in 1769), had to emigrate in 1790 probably for refusing to take an oath and lived as a French interpreter in the United States. Returning to France in 1798, he translated books written in English and German. This work by Schlözer seems to have sharpened his interest in statistics, a discipline then in its infancy, since he gave in addition, this time with his own resources, an elementary theory of statistics, in the same year 1805. It was one of the first presentations of this science in French. He then took part in the founding of the Statistical Society. Precious and beautiful copy of the dedicatee, the arch-chancellor Jean-Jacques-Régis de Cambacérès (1753-1824), linked to his O.H.R. number, 1374-3.
