French school of the 19th century. "Portrait of Julie Clary, wife of Joseph Bonaparte". Oil on oval canvas (wear and tear). 71 x 60 cm. She was the daughter of François Clary (1725-1794), a merchant in Marseille, and Françoise Rose Somis (1737-1815). On August 1, 1794, Julie Clary married Joseph Bonaparte, Napoleon's brother, in Cuges-les-Pins. In 1806, Joseph Bonaparte was made king of Naples, Julie thus became queen of Naples. But in 1808, Joachim Murat ascended the throne of Naples to replace Joseph who was made king of Spain. Once again queen, Julie preferred to stay in Mortefontaine in the Oise.
