[DECRESS] CESSART (Louis-Alexandre de). Description of the hydraulic works of Louis Alexandre de Cessart, Dean of the Inspectors General of the Ponts et Chaussées (...). Printed book on the author's manuscripts. Paris, E. Collin, Renouard, Bernard, Magimel, 1806-1808, 2 vol. in-4,[3] ff. n. ch. (false title, title, dedication to the Emperor), VII-316 and[4]-XVI-358 pp., with a beautiful portrait-frontispiece of the author engraved by B. Roger d'après Bouché, a folding board and 67 very beautiful folding plates engraved by Michel or Collin, cherry morocco, smooth back decorated alternately with seedlings of golden flecks and marine anchors in a diamond-shaped frame of golden dots and branches, very wide frame of double golden garland on the dishes, one enclosed between double gilded nets, the other looking at the centre of the dishes with small gilded anchors in spandrels, number inserted in a coat of arms of a duke in the centre, gilded garland on the cups, gilded edges, inner lace, guards lined with Empire green tabis (period binding). Beautiful copy. The only edition of this collection, produced in small numbers at the initiative of Dubois d'Arnouville, and reserved for subscribers. It brings together the studies and memoirs of the main achievements of the great engineer Cessart: I. Pont de Saumur. Rouen bridge and quay. Port of Le Havre. Port du Tréport. Pont des Arts in Paris. - II. Port of Dieppe. Rade de Cherbourg. Louis-Alexandre de CESSART (1719-1806) had begun his career in the Gendarmerie of the Maison du Roi, and in this capacity he had been campaigning from 1743 to 1746, attending the battles of Fontenoy and Raucoux. But, at the end of the War of the Austrian Succession, he was admitted in 1747 to the Corps des Ponts et Chaussées, where he would remain until his death. He was first appointed engineer of the Generalitat of Tours in 1751, and it was in this position that he built the Pont de Saumur in 1756. Then he became chief engineer, first at Ale
