[MANUSCRIT ][PRIGNY DE QUERIEUX (Mathieu-Anne-Louis... - Lot 156 - Osenat
[MANUSCRIT ][PRIGNY DE QUERIEUX (Mathieu-Anne-Louis de)]. Reports on the fight against Trafalgar & other maritime affairs. S.l., n.d., (1805), in-4,[7] ff. n. ch., covered with medium and legible writing (about 30 lines per page), modest half-toile with corners and laces, smooth back silent (period binding). Significant traces of indoor humidity. Interesting collection of two texts on the Trafalgar affair written by Commander Prigny de Quérieux (1762-1829), Chief of General Staff of Villeneuve, then appointed by the successor of the latter commander of the vessel Le Héros, blocked off Cadiz (see below): 1. report on the Cadiz road and the naval combat of the combined French & Spanish army at the command of Vice-Admiral Villeneuve. It is explicitly signed by Prigny as "cy-devant adjutant commander of the naval army". 2. The Commander before Adjutant Commander of the Naval Army to Admiral Rosily, Commander-in-Chief of the Naval Force in Cadiz. François-Etienne de ROSILY-MESROS (1748-1832) was given command of what remained of the combined fleet after Trafalgar, replacing Villeneuve. He succeeded in spite of the difficulties in reuniting a few ships which he kept for two years in front of Cadiz, while the Royal Navy blocked access to the port. Tête-bêche, we will find another text, written in the same handwriting: On how to order a watch at sea, by Mr. Baudin, lieutenant of the ship ([10] ff. n. ch.). This part also includes Notes on the Isle of France in 1804 (ff. 6v - 8r) and Observations on the battle by Mr. Lucas, Captain (ff. 8v - 10). Jean-Jacques-Etienne LUCAS (1764-1819), promoted to captain of a second class ship on 24 September 1803, took command of the Redoutable on 31 December the following year, and joined Villeneuve's combined fleet, participating in the clashes of 21 October. See Quintin, pp. 247-249, 309-311.
