«L’Empereur Napoléon Ier sur son lit de mort». Huile sur panneau. Au dos, billet manuscrit en anglais: «Painted by D. Ibbetson from a sketch made by him at St Helena, the morning after the death of Napoleon which took place in the evening of the 5th of May, at sunset. The features had fallen away during his illness, but the fullness in his throat remained. The countenance was very placid, the color of the skin very yellow, and there was a redness about the eyes which had the appearance of the head having been beaten and bruised. A picture similar to this was painted by the same person at St. Helena and was taken to England and left with George 4th. This picture was at Hampton Court.» Avec une autre note: «Painted by my fater, Denzil Ibbetson, Deputy Commisary General, Laura Ibbetson». Au dos, un dessin inachevé d'un marin. Sous verre. Cadre en bois avec cartouche. Dim: 40 x 57 cm. Avec cadre: 58 x 75 cm. On y joint un dessin sur le même sujet provenant de la Reine Hortense, copié dans un album de la duchesse de Raguse. Sous verre. OEuvre en rapport: -«L’empereur Napoléon Ier regardant dans sa lunette à Sainte Hélène», Vente Osenat du 12 avril 2015, n°347 Biographie: Denzil Ibbetson (1775-1857), officier attaché à l’état major de Wellington durant la campagne du Portugal, il intégre le département du Commissariat de l’armée britannique et arrive à Sainte-Hélène en 1815 pour prendre le poste d’officier Commissaire dans une colonie Britannique. On lui doit plusieurs dessins très réalistes de l’Empereur de son vivant, et ce profil, mort, qu’il a repris dans plusieurs compositions.
