According to family tradition, this painting was acquired from the artist in Chungking in 1944 by M. Pierre PELEN, who was a member of the French Delegation under General Pechkoff, Head of Mission.  Mr PELEN then returned to France and pursued his diplomatic career in a number of post including as French Ambassador to Mali, Romania and Denmark.  This painting has been in the possession of the family ever since and is being sold today as part of the estate of the late Mme PELEN, his widow.

Below copies of several pages from a book by Suzanne GRUMBAR (attaché d’Ambassade et amie de M. Pierre PELEN) which chronicles the acquisition in the context of a visit with the Artist.  They show a photograph of the French Embassy staff to include General Pechkoff, Generalissimo Chiang Kai Shek and M. Pierre PELEN, above and to the right of Chiang Kai Shek.
